The Q Series aircraft are the quietest turboprops flying today, thanks to the development of a revolutionary Noise and Vibration Suppression (NVS) system. Not only does this NVS technology significantly reduce noise levels, it also reduces cabin vibration, making the flight as comfortable as possible.
Advanced Avionics
The Q400 cockpit, the most modern of any turboprop, is fitted with a state-of-the-art avionics suite from Thales. With less weight and fewer parts, the Thales suite offers higher reliability than comparable older technology avionics.
The Q400 avionics suite also features a centralized diagnostic system to help pilots and mechanics quickly resolve problems. Its modular design also makes the system easy to upgrade or to add optional equipment.
An optional Head Up Guidance System (HGS®) displays actual aircraft approach flight path and projected touch down point. The system is allowing Horizon Air to fly single-engine approaches to Category III (Cat. III) weather minima - a first for a commercial regional airline aircraft.
Powerful and Innovative Engines
The Pratt & Whitney PW150A engine is the most advanced turboprop engine currently in production. Based on the PW4000, it is built with a blend of smart technology and low complexity, offering a new standard in reliability, durability, and operating economics.
Features include Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC), centralized diagnostics, low fuel consumption & emissions, new technology materials & cooling and low parts count for reduced complexity.
And while the PW150A produces nearly twice the take-off power of older turboprop engines, it is nearly 50 per cent more fuel-efficient.
High Technology Propellers
The Q400 features six-bladed all composite Dowty propellers that deliver more thrust and less noise than smaller propellers turning at higher rpms. Made from a new generation of lighter and stronger materials, these slow moving propellers are mounted further out on the wing to help reduce noise levels.
Hard to believe, but the quietest place in the cabin is between the propellers.
